- Summary:
-
"Needle and syringe programs (NSPs) operate throughout NSW to prevent transmission of HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV) among people who inject drugs (PWID). Programs include fixed-site NSPs (primary and secondary services), pharmacy-based distribution and over 100 automatic dispensing machines (ADMs). In April 2013 an ADM commenced operation in the suburb of Redfern located within the boundaries of Sydney Local Health District (SLHD) to address elevated levels of needle and syringe sharing, HIV and HCV in thearea. In response to community concerns an evaluation of the impact of the ADM was commissioned. The three objectives of the evaluation were to assess the impact of the Redfern ADM on local PWID, other local community members and the existing fixed-site NSP service." --Executive summary (page 8).
