-
Photograph documents buildings and surrounding landscape of Cummeragunja Mission Station, an Aboriginal reserve situated in Yorta Yorta country on the Murray River, New South Wales. The Cummeragunja community was made of families and individuals from several different language groups, mostly from the Yorta Yorta Nation. The Mission Station began around 1888, after dissatisfied residents of nearby Maloga Aboriginal Mission Station moved upriver to escape its authoritarian conditions. It was established on land that had been set aside for the community, following a petition presented to Governor Loftus by senior Maloga men, including William Cooper, in 1881. After a brief but successful period of independence around the turn of the century, the state government assumed control of the community under the 1909 Aborigines Protection Act. The mission was later the site of the 1939 Cummeragunja Walk off, a highly significant act of Aboriginal protest.--Information from acquisitions documentation.
