- A hidden place lies just near Port Macquarie. The favourite abode of a young girl called Annabella. This historical narrative follows events since being explored by John Oxley in early 1819 to being settled in 1821, through to complications with its sustainability to modern day issues. It has endured floods and fires along the way. Today it is a beautiful place hidden away to protect its very existence. Annabella's place is an inspired story from reading numerous documents relating to the history of Port Macquarie. I live in Annabella Downs and I wanted to know who she was and why this place was named after her, then share this with children. It is not completely historically accurate, therefore a work of fiction. The effects on local inhabitants and indigenous people is drawn into the story. Its purpose is to tell children about Port Macquarie's history, being the earliest settlement outside of Sydney, in a simple narrative that would be engaging and when disaster emanates acknowledge our volunteers. Port Macquarie celebrates 200 years of settlement in 2021. All illustrations in the book are artworks created by the author.
