The collection comprises the diary of Australian Elizabeth Lehane (née Mitchell), as she travelled overseas with her wool buyer husband John 'Jack' Augustine Lehane from January to June 1914. The diary entries describe the journey on board a German liner 'SS Seydlitz' travelling from Melbourne to Naples via Colombo and the Suez Canal, travelling by train to Paris via the Riviera, crossing the Channel to England, travelling to New York on a German liner 'SS Kronprinzessin Cecilie', a train trip across the Rocky Mountains and embarking at Vancouver for their return to Australia. The diary entries also describe people and places encountered in the lead up to the outbreak of World War I, plus business meetings of her husband relating to processing Australian wool. Also Included are a transcription written by Lehane's grandchild Robert Lehane and a copy of "Lehanes: the Irish side", a self-published Lehane family history.

Elizabeth Lehane, née Mitchell, was born in 1872. She was the daughter of impecunious Irish immigrants who settled at Castlemaine, Victoria, in the 1850s. She married John Augustine Lehane, also an Irish Australian, in 1899. John went on to have a successful career as a wool buyer in the wool trade.
