This collection of photographs taken in New Guinea in the late 1930s includes images of an experimental amphibian Sikorsky aircraft nicknamed 'Tuppy'; the pilots and support crews at work; aerial views of the New Guinean landscape including the Fly and Sepik Rivers; and the local people and villages. Captioned by the photographer Roy Savage, these photographs highlight the challenging logistics of landing, housing and servicing aircraft in New Guinea during this time.

Roy Savage was an Australian pilot and an aeronautical engineer. Born in Katanning, Western Australia, he attended technical college in Sydney. He worked as an aeronautical engineer with WASP Airlines during the early 1930s and then with Carpenter's 'air circus' between 1933-1935. Later in the 1930s, Roy Savage travelled to New Guinea to work as a pilot and aeronautical engineer for a gold prospecting company on the Fly River--Information from acquistions documentation.
