- Summary:
-
"This is a little book of true tales as they appeared, warts and all, in the newspapers of the latter half of the nineteenth century. ... The Warrego district of the 1860s and 1870s was almost beyond the pale. Law and order were not quite as they may have been in more sophisticated places. Villains of every variety found their way up the river. Foot - mainly flour, tea and sugar - was basic and often in short supply. and what with boredom and loneliness, generously lubricated with truly awful concoctions that passed for honest 'nobblers', it is hardly surprising that things got a little out of hand. Murder, suicide, brawls, the 'horrors', poisonings, deaths from thirst, these were such regular occurrences that surely few could every been truly surprised by them. It was a difficult life."--Page 5.
