Almond Tree is a personal tribute to the Kaergers of Oladdie and Eurelia of South Australia, pioneers who served the community for a period of 55 years between 1878 and 1933. This book reflects on their family's origins, traces their German heritage, and connects them to their relatives in the Barossa Valley and Appila-Yarrowie. It is the story of Gottlob and Dorothea Kaerger of Rädnitz (Brandenburg, Germany) and their children who arrived in South Australia in 1857, and their son Wilhelm Kaerger, who arrived in 1873. This book highlights the historical events of the time and how they influenced the Kaerger family. Almond Tree describes their lifestyles, personal hardships and successes. The story is pieced together around the facts, original documentation, memoirs, old hand-written letters, and the author's own experiences whilst exploring her ancestors' footsteps: from Poland (former East Brandenburg, Germany) to the Barossa Valley, the Mid and Far North of South Australia. Almond Tree is illustrated with many original photographs, family tree diagrams, sketches, maps and images of personal family items.
