- Summary:

The collection comprises newspaper clippings, memorabilia, race records, race programs, posters, scrapbooks, correspondence, and colour, and black and white photographs relating to Jack Griffin and his involvement in the Grafton to Inverell Cycle Classic, the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games, the Goulburn to Sydney Cycle Classic, Tour of the West, Bourke to Sydney cycle race, New Zealand Track Tour and Test Series, and the New Zealand Games. A considerable part of the collection concentrates on the written and photographed history of the Grafton to Inverell Cycle Classic. The Grafton to Inverell Cycle Classic is one of Australia’s oldest and, some would say, toughest races. Also included are cycling medals and awards bestowed on Jack Griffin, cycling books and magazines. This collection documents the cycling life of one of Australia’s most revered cyclists, and the social activities of a rural Australian cycling community.
- Biography/History:
-
Jack Griffin's career spanned over 50 years as a cyclist, bike shop owner, coach, race promotor and organiser. He was a founder of the Grafton to Inverell Cycling Classic in 1961, in which he also rode, as well as other editions of the race. He went on to be Director of the race from 1962 to 1993, and was therefore responsible for it's organising and running. One of Griffin’s most significant decisions for the Grafton to Inverell was to bring the race more in line with European classic races and to elevate it as one of the most revered one-day races in Australia. The Grafton to Inverell Cycle Classic has attracted class cyclists such as Australian Champions, Commonwealth and Olympic medalists, and international stars. Griffin was acknowledged for his services to cycling receiving Life Membership of Cycling New South Wales in 1982, the Australian Sports Medal for Outstanding Service to Sport in 2000, and an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in 2003.
