- Summary:
-
'A detailed genealogical study of the lives of an English convict James Bugg, his Birrpai Aboriginal partner Charlotte, and some of their descendants down through seven generations. This dynasty commenced in the 1820's amid the appropriation of Birrpai traditional lands by the Australian Agricultural Company in establishing its Port Stephens and then Warrah Estates. It highlights the stoicism and resilience of the apical ancestors in raising eight children amid colonial conflict, child removal and the overhanging threat of James having his Ticket of Leave cancelled. Their children (including the oft highlighted Mary Ann Bugg) and subsequent generations, continued their stoicism and resilience as they fought to maintain links with culture and country despite forced child removal and eviction from their traditional country amid the racist and genocidal policies and practices of segregation and assimilation imposed upon them by the Aboriginal Protection Board, the Aboriginal Welfare Board and subsequent government policies through to today. .'--Google books
