- Biography/History:
-
Hans Werner Luyken (1913 - 1996) was involved in Australia's chemical industry, including pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, pesticides, plastics, dyestuffs and photographics. He began a cadetship at Chemical Combine IG Farbenindustrie, Germany in 1931, and worked for IG in Belgium from 1933 to 1936. Luyken accepted a posting as the representative of I.G. Farben at Henry H. York and Co in Sydney in 1936, arriving in Sydney in 1937. On 4 September 1939 Luyken was taken to internment camp for the remainder of the war: 6 years and 5 months. In 1947 Luyken was re-employed by Henry York until 1965, when he became the founding Managing Director of Bayer Australia Limited. Luyken established a film-developing centre at Nunawading in Victoria, imported chemicals to Australia's rural industries and later established a successful agricultural research station in Queensland. Luyken oversaw Bayer's Sydney manufacturing complex and was involved in the court case where Bayer successfully challenged the American drug company Starling for the return of its distinctive corporate logo.
