A story of surprising determination in which the author, despite being virtually abandoned by his parents when young, persevered to become a leading ceramic artist. After jumping ship in North Queensland when just 18 without passport or money, British-born Les hid out on rural properties working as a stable hand and general roustabout, then worked night shifts as a cab driver while completing an arts course in Sydney. He became an apprentice at the Sturt Workshops at Mittagong in 1957, ultimately beconing its director. In 1971 he took up an appointment at the University of Tasmania, where he established the Ceramic Studio, and stayed on the island for the next 33 years. He was awarded the Order of Australia in 2013, and now lives at Coledale on the NSW coast south of Sydney.
