- National Library of Australia's FERG/7143 copy quarter-bound in brown leather with faded marbled boards; watermarked with partial fleur de lys, letter 'AP' and the date 1804; Ferguson Collection bookplate tipped in on first free end paper; clipping from a bookseller's catalogue describing the work, with a ms. note stating, "As a rule this book contains 38 or 39 specimens but this copy has 56." pasted on the verso of the front cover.
- Library's SRq COOK 14 (Petherick?) copy is an altered copy re-bound subsequent to publication (quarter-bound in green morocco with five raised bands, marbled boards, edges and endpapers); text pages have been removed from their original octavo binding and tipped into quarto pages of cream art paper watermarked 'Michallet'; bookseller's catalogue description inserted has a copy listed as item 655 which suggests prior ownership by Henry Benjamin Hanbury Beaufoy, F.R.S. (1780-1851); inscribed inside in red, MS 122 indicating a connection with Rev. Watts Wilkinson, 1755-1840 (see NLA collection, MS 122); contains 59 samples.
- National Library of Australia's SR COOK 44 copy (SR2 copy) is stamped 'Parliament of the Commonwealth Library' and accessioned 24869, 13 September 1910; also embossed 'Commonwealth National Library'; inscribed by previous owner, John Naish Smart, M.R.C.S, L.M., L.R.C.P. (1839-1909) and dated 1880. Quarter-bound in brown leather with grey papered boards; no watermarks; acquired by the Parliamentary Library from Angus & Robertson booksellers in September 1910. Contains 38 samples.
- National Library of Australia's PIC copy [Nan Kivell collection] is quarter-bound by W.T. Morrell of London sometime between 1861 and 1887 in brown leather with cloth covers; includes an inscription: "From the Bishop of Honululu Sep. 20th 1868" (ie Bishop of Honolulu, Thomas Nettleship Staley (1823-1898)) above one of the 39 samples; small pencil inscription "JHP" inside back cover. Spine title: Cook cloth 1787.
- Bark cloth, or tapa, was traditionally produced throughout the islands of the South Pacific from the bark of trees such as the paper mulberry or breadfruit tree. Cloth was produced in distinctive artistic and cultural styles for both functional and ceremonial purposes.
- Alexander H. Shaw was a bookseller and dealer in natural history who conducted his business with his brother Harry (Henry) Shaw in Aberdeen and London from 1776. Alexander Shaw died in Aberdeen on 22 July 1807.
