MS 2823 comprises papers relating to the life and career of Keith Murdoch, including correspondence, speeches, press clippings, photographs and other material. The collection features Murdoch's iconic 1915 'Gallipoli letter', an account of the Gallipoli campaign written to Prime Minister Andrew Fisher. The correspondence also includes letters from Lionel Lindsay to Murdoch and letters from Murdoch's father Patrick Murdoch (12 boxes, 3 fol. boxes, 1 security binder).

Journalist and newspaper magnate. Keith Arthur Murdoch was born in Melbourne in 1885, son of Reverend Patrick John and Annie Brown Murdoch late of Aberdeenshire, Scotland. He was educated at Camberwell Grammar School and the London School of Economics. He began a career in journalism with the Melbourne Age, as a correspondent for the district of Malvern. In 1907, Murdoch left for London where he attended the London School of Economics. In 1910, Murdoch returned to The Age as a staff reporter for two years prior to becoming political correspondent for the Sydney evening Sun in 1912. In 1915, Denison transferred Murdoch to London as managing editor of the United Cable Service of the Sun and the Melbourne Herald.
He was then commissioned by Fisher and Pearce to go to Gallipoli as war correspondent to investigate Australian Imperial Force mail service and associated matters. He was knighted in 1933 and appointed trustee of the National Gallery, Victoria in the same year. He was the Director-General of Information from June-December 1940 and President of the Australian-American Association (Victorian Section) from 1941 until 1946. He was appointed Chairman of Directors, Herald and Weekly Times in 1942 and director of Herald, Sun News-Pictorial and associated publications. Murdoch married Elisabeth, daughter of Rupert Greene in 1928. They had one son, Keith Rupert and three daughters. Murdoch died in 1952.
