- Published in Argonauts of the south, 1925, facing p. 259. Detail also published in Shackleton's South, 1919, facing p. 160 with the caption: Launching the James Caird on the relief voyage to South Georgia. The boat was but a frail cockle-shell with an improvised deck made from fragments of canvas and packing case lids. The successful crossing of 750 miles of tempestuous icy sub-Antarctic Ocean is one of the greatest feats in the annals of exploration.
