The papers reflect Davoren's legal work and include briefs, addresses to juries, and copies of journal and seminar articles. There is also correspondence, notes, newspaper clippings, cash ledger and address books and some printed items.

The late John Davoren was born of Irish parents in 1901. He was educated in South Australia, at the Marist Brothers' Sacred Heart College, Adelaide, and later awarded an LL.B. from the University of Adelaide in 1922. Davoren's legal career which began in Broken Hill in 1924, involved many of the most widely publicised murder trials in NSW. Between 1942 and 1954 he worked with the RAAF and left as a Wing Commander. During his final years with the RAAF Davoren was Director of Legal Services in Melbourne. His many distinctions included the appointment in 1960 as a Queen's Council, his membership of the Courts Martial Appeal Tribunal, and his council membership of the International Commission of Jurists.
