The Clyde Navigation Trust was established by the 1858 Clyde Navigation Consolidation Act, replacing the River Improvement Trust. The Act specified that there should be 25 trustees, consisting of the Lord Provost and nine town councillors, two members of the Chamber of Commerce, two members of the Merchants House, two members of the Trades House (Trades Hall), and nine chosen by the shipowners and ratepayers. The responsibilities of the trustees included the deepening, widening and dredging of the Clyde River, the cleansing and opening of streams flowing into the river, the erection and maintenance of quays, jetties, banks, walls, wharves, warehouses and other works, and the erection and mooring of beacons and buoys.
The Navigation Trust Building in Robertson Street, Glasgow, designed by Sir James Burnet, was built in Italianate style in 1883-86. A baroque cornerpiece extension, with a concrete dome, was added in 1905-8.
In 1966 the Clyde Navigation Trust was replaced by the Clyde Port Authority. In 1992 port facilities on the River Clyde became the responsibility of Clydeport PLC.
Harold Ford, the secretary of the Trust, was sent to Australia and New Zealand in 1928-29 to encourage Australian primary producers, merchants and shipowners to send Australian goods directly to Glasgow.
