The collection consists mainly of correspondence addressed to Tennyson with some documents. There are approximately 180 letters covering the years 1899-1913, but principally dated 1901-1903, dealing with the period when Tennyson was Acting Governor-General and Governor-General.
Chief correspondents are Sir Edmund Barton, Sir George Clarke, Governor of Victoria, and Sir Samuel Way of South Australia.
There are also copies of 6 despatches sent to the Secretary of State by various state governors and documents relating to the visit by Sir Harry Rawson and the Deputy Administrator, W. Houston, to Norfolk Island in 1903.

Tennyson, Hallam, 2nd Baron Tennyson (1852-1928). Son of poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson. He was appointed Governor of South Australia in 1899 and became Acting Governor-General of Australia in 1902. He was Governor-General from January 1903 to January 1904.
