Background

Biographical Note:

Tom Uren was born in Balmain, Sydney in 1921 and was educated at Manly High School. His career as a professional boxer was interrupted by wartime service. He was a prisoner of the Japanese from 1942 to 1945, during which time he worked on the Burma-Siam Railway.

From 1958 to 1990 he was the ALP member for the House of Representatives seat of Reid, located in western Sydney. From 1973-75 he was the Minister for Urban and Regional Development, and from 1976 to 1977 he was Deputy Leader of the Opposition. In 1983 he became Minister for Territories and Local Government, and from 1984 to 1987 he was Minister for Local Government and Administrative Services.

Throughout his Parliamentary career Tom Uren was an active member of the left wing of the ALP, maintaining opposition to the Vietnam War, conscription and nuclear testing. His chief political interests are urban affairs, the environment, veterans' affairs and security and intelligence.

Provenance:

This collection covers the period 1970 78 and was transferred to the Library in a number of consignments between 1977 and 1979. Some of the consignments came directly from Tom Uren while the remainder came via Uren's Press Secretary, Clem Lloyd, who used the papers to write an administrative history of the Department of Urban and Regional Development.
