Content Summary:

The collection consists of correspondence, reports, minutes of meetings, notes, printed material, newspaper clippings, conference proceedings, government documents and miscellaneous items of a personal nature. It should be noted that the largest part of this collection consists of photocopies of original items (1905-1946) which are located in the National Archives of Australia.

The bulk of material relates to Gow's research for a thesis, entitled: Australian Defence Debate, 1923-1941, a draft of which is included in this collection. There is also material relating to Gow's work as a tutor at the Royal Military College, Canberra.

Biographical Note:

Neil Gow was born on 30 November 1948 at Subiaco, Western Australia. He attended the University of Western Australia where he was awarded a BA History (Honours).

In March 1972, he commenced studies at the Royal Military College under the Commonwealth Post Graduate Research Scheme. After a year of research, he became a teaching Fellow of the Royal Military College until December 1975.

Provenance:

This collection was donated to the National Library by Neil Gow in 1976.

Arrangement:

The various series were created out of broad subject areas which reflect the structure of defence in Australia as well as Gow's research interests. As far as possible the original order was maintained. The papers which fell into those subject areas were then arranged chronologically, where possible.
