Background
- Biographical Note:

Academic, author and essayist. Born Scotland. Lecturer at the University of Melbourne, 1904-1911. In 1913 he became the first Professor of English at the University of Western Australia, retiring in 1939. Between 1943 and 1947 he was Chancellor of the University. Murdoch was knighted in 1964.
