On 8 June 1956, after a period acting in the position, Edwards was appointed as Rector of St James Church of England, Sydney. He retired from the position in August 1962. During his time as Rector, he undertook a major project in planning and overseeing the construction of an office block on the site occupied by the Church Hall in Philip Street, Sydney. The building was opened on 14 September 1963.
Contained in this series are papers relating to Edwards' time at St James. There are letters of congratulation on his appointment, with correspondents including G.G. Chambers, J. Wilson Hogg (Headmaster, Trinity Grammar School, Sydney), the Bishop of Gippsland, Canon Farnham Maynard (Melbourne), Bert Smith (Rector of Braidwood), Fred Whitlam, (Solicitor-General) and John Moody (St Francis' College, Milton). Other papers include copies of Forms of Service for religious and special services; newspaper cuttings; copies of the monthly church newsletter, Church Messenger (Vol 28, no. 7, Feb 1938; Vol 40, No. 2, Mar 1950 - Vol 51, No. 4, 1962 - incomplete set); notes on the history of St James, 1818-1918; notes on the history of the altar silver; and a copy of a 1956 report by G.A. King, from the Church of England Historical Society, on the issue of preserving historical churches.
- Immediate source of acquisition:
- The papers of William John Edwards were donated to the Library by his son-in-law, Arthur Pulford, in 2003. The papers had been in the possession of Edwards' daughter, Jill Pulford, since 1967 and came to the Library following her death.
