Charles Hill (1823-1894) was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and spent the greater part of his life as a merchant in Java. In 1847 he married Cornelia de Neufville. In 1863 he became bankrupt and he and his family emigrated to New Zealand, where his aunt owned land near Dunedin. Hill soon returned to the East Indies, but his wife remained in Nelson until 1871. She then returned to Batavia with her eldest daughter Cornelia (Cora) (1852-1940). Cora married Wulf von Bultzingslowen in 1873 and spent most of her life in Germany, although she travelled extensively. Her sister Annie (1856-1946) was left in New Zealand with an aunt in 1871 and in 1890 she married Rev. Fred Chatterton of Nelson.
