Background
- Content Summary:
-
Maps in the National Archives (TNA) of the UK fall into two categories: maps extracted by the TNA (then Public Record Office) staff from correspondence and other records, and maps assembled in a departmental library and transferred en bloc to the TNA.
Maps in the first category are given a number with a prefix which indicates their origin; for instance, MPG indicates that the map was originally in a Colonial Office class and MR (previously MPR) indicates that the map was in a Rail class.
There are many Australian and New Zealand maps, both printed and manuscript, in the map classes, but only eight were filmed by the Australian Joint Copying Project. An example of the second category is CO 700. The maps in this class filmed by the Australian Joint Copying Project Guide to the Records of the Colonial Office (as filmed by the AJCP).
