Background

Content Summary:

Assignments and notice of assignment 1836 and 1838 by William Kent to John Miller of Lambeth, Surrey, bookseller, relating to a share in property in New South Wales. Capt. Philip P. King acted in New South Wales as agent in the sale of the property. The documents were drawn up and signed in Cheltenham and bear receipts for moneys received.

Power of Attorney 14 March 1863 from Rev. Henry Tingcombe of Camden. New South Wales, to John P. Stilwell relating to premises in George Street, Sydney.

Biographical / Historical:

William Kent (1799-1870), a wine merchant of Cheltenham, England, was the son of Captain William Kent (1760-1812), captain of HMS Supply. His son was born in the colony, but by 1828 was living in Cheltenham in England. He visited Sydney 12 December 1838-2 January 1839. Property referred to in the documents may have been several farms which his father owned near Kissing Point, Sydney, and which were sold between 1835 and 1841. Captain Phillip Parker King, the son of Governor Philip King, acted in the sale of the properties in New South Wales.

The firm of Stillwell Company amalgamated with the Westminster Bank in 1922.
