MS 1578 comprises correspondence, research notes, addresses, bibliographies, lectures and collected historical documents relating to Colin Roderick's work as an author, historian and editor. The collection includes material on various subjects including James Tucker, Jane New, censorship, the Chair of Australian Literature, defamation, Miles Franklin, Australian short story and travel, Roderic Quinn memorial, Australian novelists, Alexander Harris, Mrs Campbell Praed and John Knatchbull. Also included are G.B. Lancaster letters and Mary Gilmore documents and letters (54 boxes, 75 fol. volumes, 5 cartons).

Collection consists of a letterbook, two sketchbooks and seven journals describing Mackie's missionary tour of Australia, New Zealand and South Africa in 1852-1855.The journals record not only Mackie's missionary work but also details of colonial social and economic life. The sketchbooks include small and detailed drawings of typographical, botanical and natural history subjects. They also record the early settlements and scenery in Australia, New Zealand and the Cape.

Subjects include: the foundation of South Australia; the formation of the New Zealand Association in 1837; the publication of The British Colonization of New Zealand; arrival of William Wakefield and party in New Zealand in 1840; arrival of E.G. Wakefield in 1853; the murder of Arthur Wakefield by Maoris in 1843; the dispute with Lord Stanley; and the proposal in 1847 for a new colony in New Zealand.
