MS 1884 comprises correspondence, diaries, notebooks, drafts of manuscripts, subject files, press cuttings, pamphlets, souvenirs, printed items, photographs, glass slides and other memorabilia relating to all aspects of General Sir John Monash's life and career. The collection includes juvenilia and items dating from Monash's school and university days. The correspondents include Hannah Victoria Moss (whom he married in 1891), J.T.N. Anderson (business partner), Mathilda Monash (sister) and other members of the Monash family, J. Gibson (business), Walter Rosenhain, Clara Stockfeld, Eva Blashki, Rose Blashki, Minnie Blashki, Jeanette Krakowski, Ada Krakowski, Kitty Lunday, Amy and Evie Corrie and Rose Schield.

Political events closely affected the mission stations and are documented in the Society's records, including the proclamation of a British Protectorate in eastern New Guinea in 1884.
