Biography/History

Bernard Charles Cronin, born 1884, arrived in Melbourne 1890. Educated in Melbourne and Dookie Agricultural College, Cronin became an author of novels, short stories, plays and many articles for newspapers and magazines. Particular interests included natural history, bush life and the pioneering days.

Notes

Predominantly, the collection consists of photographs from Cronin's expeditions to Central Australia. Images depict the South Australian Eclipse Expedition to Cordillo Downs to test Einstein's Relativity Theory during the eclipse on 21 September, 1922, through the Sturt Stony Desert country. Other images include: Cronin in semi-arid desert; camels, camel trains and cameleers; water wells; Aboriginal men, women and children; bush camps and homestead buildings. Images from the McDonnell Ranges trip show Aboriginal rock carvings at Ruby Gorge.

Other slides reflect Cronin's interest in flora, fauna, fossils, geological land formation and oil exploration illustrated with views from Isle of Wight, United Kingdom, Papua, and Yosemite, United States, plus maps and diagrams taken from unidentified publications. Also included are views of Canberra and district in the 1920s: early townscapes; Parliament House; Commonwealth Offices; Hotel Canberra; Duntroon House; Major General Bridges memorial tombstone designed by Walter Burley Griffin; feature map of Canberra, the Federation's Capital; Cotter Dam, and a geological map and diagram of Lake George. Other photographs include: Cronin's weekend cottage in Upwey, Dandenong Ranges, Victoria, and Dookie Agricultural College, Victoria.
