Malcolm Paine, born in 1931, remembers his early days in England; he talks about learning the art of blacksmithing from older men whilst working in the blacksmiths shops during the Second World War; the fact that as the majority of young men were serving in the forces, his tutors were older blacksmiths who would normally have retired; gaining an insight into the ways of an earlier era; the folklore of blacksmithing including superstitions and songs; he sings several 'blacksmith songs' and plays old tunes on the mouth organ.
