Carol Durkin speaks about her schooling and her family background; attending the University of Melbourne to study Social Work; marrying and moving to England; her work in psychiatric social work and her interest in legal issues with families; after returning to Australia she finished an Arts Degree and studied Law; Sir Martin Roth in UK.; practising law and her experiences of the changes to the role of women in law; compares this to women in aviation; how she became involved with aviation after the break up of her first marriage; her second husband, Sydney businessman, Stan Durkin; her pilot training, learning to fly at Camden and studying theory at Liverpool TAFE; Bill Whitworth; gaining a private pilot's licence and her husband's purchase of a Bonanza A36; how she dealt with his flying needs; her insistence on safety; the role of air traffic controllers and their helpfulness; the continuous flying between capital cities and occasionally larger rural towns; how she coped with bush flying without controllers to advise; the discovery of the Australian Women's Pilots Association; her memories of meetings, conferences and people; the size of the association and the diversity of members.
Durkin talks about her Presidency of the Association and the 'Fear of Flying' program and its problems; how advice was given out to women who wanted to be pilots; women's skills for flying; her move to Aviation Safety Forum (ASF) as an individual representative; practicing law and her interest in aviation law; studying for her doctorate; experiences with safety issues; how the ASF works and its staff; the Guild of Air Pilots in Australia; the regulatory structure of aviation in Australia and its difficulties; the evolution of aviation law and its development over a relatively short time span; her encouragement of CASA to award scholarships for further research; her current flying escapades and her last aircraft; recalls air traffic controllers in the first days of her flying and their friendly encouragement; reviews major changes in aviation as akin to other cultural alterations; the acceptance of women in the profession; the emotions that can come with flying and situations where things have gone wrong; she acknowledges the role and worth of air traffic control and the trust between pilot and controller; final comments summing up her role on ASF and its development; the Award of Centenary Medal.
