Len Guy, born 1916 in Bendigo, Vic. He recalls his family background, his father migrating from south China around 1916 & buying a business in Binnaway, N.S.W.; early memories of retail stores & community life in Binnaway; community relations in Binnaway; discrimination; his early education; Chinese traditions in the family; mother's religion; observance of the Chinese New Year; family business during the Depression years; Chinese herbal remedies handed down through the generations; musical interests of the family; teaching music (piano, violin and saxaphone); playing music socially and for dances as part of different bands (eg. Railway Dance Band, Rhythm Rascals); dance nights, types of dances and the bands that he played with (eg. a fill-in performer for Frank Bourke and the White Rose Orchestra; impact of rock'n'roll on old time dance bands; dancing competitions.
Guy recalls the war years in Binnaway, N.S.W.; changes in business after the war; better roads & loss of services to bigger towns; importance of the railway to Binnaway; railway population; last service store to self serve in 1981, retiring the same year from the business; family involvement in local organization.
