In 1849 several leaders of the Young Ireland Party were sent to Tasmania: William Smith O'Brien; Thomas Francis Meagher; Terence Bellew MacManus and Patrick O'Donohoe (or O'Donaghue). John Martin and Kevin O'Doherty had been sent in 1848.
