Otton born in Sydney but raised in Eden describes her childhood, how her great grandfather arrived in Sydney in 1842 & later bought the whaling station at Boyd Town for 100 pounds,recalls their home in the bush around the whaling station & surrounding community, how she rode horses & played games but had no toys but many pets instead,her education leading to boarding school at Eden from age 16, local dances held in the home & travelling to the various balls in Eden and Bega in the 1920s, marriage at age 24, describes her grandmother as a midwife & her remedies,how coddling moth was destroyed on apple trees,family expectations on her as she grew up such as riding horses & playing piano,singing & playing cards, describes the whaling industry at East Boyd & how Aborigines assisted every winter,how her father worked on the boats had a share in the boiling down, how killer whales were used to herd & kill whales &how they were rewarded, how the whales began to dwindle and the industry began to close down from 1914/15, how her father built whaling boats,list the names of Aborigines that helped with the whaling,how they taught her father how to make & throw spears,how they played the gum leaf, how coastal steamers supplied the station with groceries and machinery and she travelled to Sydney on a steamer, how her father bought a house at Eden in 1920, living at Bega when married into a family connected with a cordial factory, recalls house duties using stringy bark brushes, tea tree brooms....etc.
