James was separated from her family at the age of 5 and taken to the United Aborigines Mission Home, Oodnadatta, S. Aust. She describes the living conditions at the Home. At the age of 13, she was moved to Colebrook Home in Eden Hills. She describes the harsh living conditions there. At the age of 16 James was moved to Umeewarra Brethren Mission before reuniting with her parents. She talks about the difficulties in re-establishing a relationship with her family because she had forgotten her people's language. She also discusses the removal of her two oldest children while she was hospitalised.
