Hamilton, former diplomatic staff member of the Australian Embassy in China and Chinese Australian, speaks of his position as Financial Officer and Vice-Consul at the Australian Embassy in Nanking from May 1947 to October 1949, the staff employed at the Embassy in particular their characters and relationships, the social life within the wider diplomatic community, the nature and lifestyle of Nanking at that time, his analysis of prominent people in the Nanking national government, the relations between Australia and China, the opinions of the Chinese of Australians, the sequence of events that fuelled the advance of the Chinese Communists and the subsequent disintegration of their Nationalist Government leading to the changeover from the Nationalists to the Communists in Nanking.
