Folkloric recording. Joe Canto, Antonia Canto and Lucia de Bortoli, retired tobacco farmers recall their lives as Italian migrants in Australia and their Italian traditions.
An interview conducted in the Texas, Qld. area regarding the Italian tobacco growers. Joe Canto, born 1934 came to Australia in 1939 and shortly after his father was interned because of WWII. Joe and his siblings (Lucia is his sister) were placed in St. Joseph's Orphanage at Rockhampton and he recounts the effect this separation had on his family. Joe, Antonia (Joe's wife) and Lucia sing traditional Italian songs, including those Joe learnt from the older Italian tobacco farmers in the area. Joe, Antonia & Lucia recall the de Bortoli family life in Australia as Italian migrants in the 1940s-1950s; traditions of Italy; tobacco farming in the early days of the industry in Quuensland.
