Clarke was employed as a junior nurse at Kate Cocks' Babies Home in Hove, S. Aust., which accommodated Aboriginal children and their mothers. She describes the living conditions at the Home, the attitudes of the staff, and the changes in both over time. Clarke later became a Methodist missionary and was employed as a cottage mother (Seaview cottage) on Croker Island, N.T. over the period 1955-64. She describes the rules, routines and organization of the Mission. Clarke cared for 20 children in total, some of whom had transferred from the Retta Dixon Home, Darwin.
Clarke outlines the foster system introduced around 1957, her brief return to Kate Cocks' Home before training in social work, and her employment as a social worker with the Fostering Section of the South Australian Department of Aboriginal Affairs (DAA) over the period 1966-70. Clarke then worked for the South Australian Department for Community Welfare until her retirement in 1986. She reviews her experiences with various organizations including the DAA and speaks about the trauma caused by the separation of families.
