McAndrew was born in Scotland and migrated to Australia in 1967. He joined the Northern Territory police force, serving at Katherine from 1968 to 1971 and in Darwin from 1971 to 1980. He speaks about general policing and work with Aboriginal people, and details three cases of child removal in which he was involved. He also discusses the attitude towards Aboriginal people in the Northern Territory during the period he lived there. In 1980, McAndrew moved to South Australia and worked as a prison guard at Adelaide Gaol. Drawing on his own experience with the prison system, he discusses the issue of Aboriginal deaths in custody. He left correctional services work in 1994 to become a parking inspector.
