Conversation: Tom talks about his background, sleeper cutting at the Nellica, exporting sleepers, his schooldays, income from sleeper cutting, whaling stories, of how sleeper cutters were exempted from war service in WWII, means of transport. Carrie tells of her education, her school days, family history, milking cows, all the family being involved in sleeper cutting, local entertainment (dances, shows, circus), her mother's history. Tom talks about slab hut construction, the Eden Show, doctors and Mr Lee the chemist, playing crosscut saws, parties, herbal treatments for diabetes and skin cancer, music in the family, Nance learning the guitar, singing in front of the fire
