Her father's family were from the Murray-Darnley Islands in the Torres Strait and her mother is a non-Indigenous Australian of Irish ancestry. Rhianna attended five years of primary school at Weipa North and then attended Inala primary school after the family moved to Brisbane. Her secondary schooling was completed at the Catholic Brigidine college at Indooroopilly. In Year 11, she was president of Interact, a Rotary youth group. Pursuing her interests in non-print journalism, in 1994, she did work experience as a Year 12 student in the TV news department of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Brisbane.
