Simon Angok, born 1972 in Wau, Southern Sudan, talks about his family background; early memories of his childhood; frequent moves around the country because of his father's job; life in Khartoum; education; the history of the conflict in the Sudan; religion; living conditions; effect of colonisation; 1955 mutiny and 1972 civil war; regionalisation of South Sudan; diversity of the people and culture; second mutiny (1983) and introduction of strict laws; war with Southern Sudan and the split within the political divisions; the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt; the phenomena of political religion; life after the split and effect on the family; conscription and military training; availability of university courses; his affiliation and politics being questioned; gaining employment at his former school; the running of the school by the Christian Brothers; security and safety at the school; fleeing to India; studying in India for a Bachelor of Science in 1998; Sudanese community in Adelaide; Sudanese Community Association; his culture, language and dialects; marriage to a Sudanese girl; influence of cultural values on his family life; working in the area of mental health.
