Alfred William Martin was born in Clarence Plains, Tasmania, the first son of William Martin (1805/6-1878), a convict transported to Tasmania, and Hannah Braim (1825/6-1860). Alfred William Martin was educated at Kettering Grammar School in Northamptonshire, while his parents were revisiting England. Returning to Tasmania, Martin became a seaman. He firstly joined the ship Gem, sailing from Hobart, and then, while still in his teens, he sailed on the whaler Southern Cross to whaling grounds off New Zealand, New South Wales and the New Hebrides (Vanuatu). He subsequently sailed on the schooner Jeannie Darling carrying timber and other goods between Melbourne and Schnapper Point (renamed Mornington in 1864).
In Melbourne, Martin joined the crew of the brigatine El Zéfiro under the command of Captain Manuel Dias Garcias of Peru. On a voyage that traversed the Pacific, El Zéfiro was involved in opium smuggling in the Philippines, and also traded in the Marshall Islands, Gilbert and Ellice Islands, Niue, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji and the New Hebrides. The voyage proceeded to the Banks Islands, Guadalcanal, Bougainville, the Moluccas, Celebes and Manila. El Zéfiro returned to Bougainville, and, reinforced with Bougainville warriors, carried out a blackbirding raid in the New Hebrides. El Zéfiro continued on to South America where the Hebridean slaves were sold in Peru.
