Gordon Wye, born in 1935, discusses his father's service in Egypt and Gallipoli in WWI; his father being wounded in battle and returning to Australia (1916); his father obtaining a soldier settlement block at Nyngan, New South Wales (1917); a description of that block and the terrain; his father living in a tent on the block; hotels in that area; roads and transportation; fencing; a visit to the area by the Prince of Wales (1920); ring-barking; Chinese workers; sheep breeds and dipping; shearing; his father's difficulties performing heavy farm work because of his war wounds; practical support and assistance from neighbours; camaraderie and the ANZAC spirit on the settlement; the Returned Services League; blocks and hardships at other settlements.
Wye discusses Government loans; his parents' marriage (1932); his mother's family background; the construction of a house; descriptions of that house and it's layout; the introduction of electricity (1936); household amenities; his mother's domestic duties; facilities for childbirth; the children's domestic chores; correspondence schooling; the Depression; itinerant workers; bee-keeping; drought and dust-storms; bush-fires and floods; water-supply; snakes; rabbits plagues and myxomatosis; attending boarding school in Orange; learning to be a wool classer; childhood hobbies and excursions; finding his father's and grandfather's diaries; his retirement (1995).
