Summary

MS Acc10.191 comprises papers relating to the career of Bruce Bennett. The collection includes lecture material, conference papers, research material, professional correspondence and some personal correspondence. Significant topics include the Oxford literary history of Australia, the development of Australian studies as a discipline, the promotion of Australian literature overseas, especially in India, short fiction in Australia, post-colonialism, the Australian Literature Electronic Gateway, Judith Wright, Frank Moorhouse, Helen Garner, Dorothy Hewett, Clive James, as well as Bennett's links to the National University of Singapore, Georgetown University, Wollongong University, University of Western Sydney, Australian National University and the University of Bologna (28 boxes, 1 poster roll).

The Acc12.130 instalment comprises miscellaneous published and unpublished papers, lecture and research notes for various projects, including the Espionage Project and the Australian Expatriates Project. Also, some miscellaneous material, including interview tapes relating to Peter Porter and Dorothy Hewett (31 boxes).

The Acc13.035 instalment include Bruce Bennett's lecture notes, and overseas journals with published articles written by Bennett (12 boxes).

Biography/History

Academic, writer and editor. Bruce Harry Bennett was born and received his early education in Perth, Western Australia. A Rhodes Scholar, Bennett was a graduate of the universities of Western Australia, Oxford and London. From 1968-1992 Bennett taught at the University of Western Australia, where he was Associate Professor and Director of the Centre for Studies in Australian Literature and edited the literary journal Westerly. In 1993, he commenced a long association with the Australian Defence Force Academy campus of the University of New South Wales, where he was emeritus professor in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Amongst other literature-related activities, Bennett held visiting appointments at universities in Asia, Europe and North America, served on the Australian National Commission for UNESCO from 1985-1990 and wrote and edited numerous books, articles and reports on Australian literature, culture and society. Bennett received wide recognition for his service to Australian literature and university education, including being made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 1993. Bennett died in Canberra in April 2012.
