- Summary:
-
This study focused on supervisory processes used by primary teachers in Queensland, Australia, who were perceived to be excellent student teacher supervisors. Structured interviews were conducted with 32 supervising teachers working with student teachers, some of whom were also interviewed. Synthesis of data collected from these interviews resulted in a broad profile of the supervising teachers and their behaviors. "Excellent" supervising teachers tended to prepare in advance for the student teacher; emphasize a positive beginning to student teaching; seek appropriate information from student teachers; convey expectations to student teachers; arrange and conduct effective pre-lesson and post-lesson discussion; provide opportunities for purposeful observation of student teachers; cooperate with training institution faculty; afford some autonomy to student teachers; and establish rapport with student teachers.
