The concept of self-esteem is in no way absolute. Its determinants, variations, and complex nature are continuously being challenged. This study examined the adolescent female's perception of herself, as well as her evaluation of the communicative relationship with her mother. Subjects (N=26) were female high school students, ages 15-18. Subjects completed the General Population Questionnaire, the Index of Self-Esteem, and the Parent Adolescent Communication Inventory. Findings supported the hypothesis that the adolescent female who perceives herself as having high self-esteem will also perceive a positive communicative relationship with her mother. No information as to the causality or reasons for the association of the variables can be inferred. Possible explanations can only be had through further research, investigation and humanistic interviews. (ABL)
