American children do not bring uniform characteristics to the school setting. The at-risk student actually learns, behaves, and thinks differently from the student considered ideally suited to traditional programming. The poor "fit" between the at-risk students' natural characteristics and the expectations of the traditional school setting can be devastating. While easily mistaken for unmotivated, lethargic, disruptive detractors, these are often bright, talented persons in need of a specially designed environment. The Dent Middle School in Columbia, South Carolina, has developed a program called Target Lab which promises success for at-risk students. The program's alternative climate has removed or neutralized those elements of the traditional setting that thwart the at-risk cognitively, socially, and emotionally. The primary focus is on performance, and students learn that their own behavior can lead to success. Program personnel--a full-time teacher, half-time teacher, volunteers and guidance counselors--use a variety of outside sources and agencies to provide services which strengthen the student and his or her family. The Target students complete much of their work with specially designed software that offers immediate feedback on performance, allowing students to accelerate within the curriculum and enhance their skill and knowledge levels in reading and mathematics. Interdisciplinary units requiring direct teaching and research are used as well. Teachers in the lab become intensely involved with the students' daily lives and decisions, teaching them self-discipline as well as study and organizational skills, and providing models for emulation. Target students are also encouraged to give service to the community. Included in the counseling component of the program are units on encouraging students' appreciation of self-worth, conflict management, communication skills, and study skills. Evaluation shows the program to be successful routinely in the behavior, attitude, and accomplishment of students who accept the challenge of participating in the Target program. (HTH)
