Folkloric recording. John Graham talks about his early life; being a loner until meeting his future wife, Colleen at a dance; after marriage, establishing a vegetable garden; other ways of providing for the family on a low income; working 7 days a week, a 'jack of all trades', splitting shingles for roofing, post and rail fencing, to restoring heritage bushman's huts. Colleen Graham is a cook, preserver, sewer, decorator and handy woman. She talks about her family background; schooling; chores and family life; leaving school and working a variety jobs. They talk about their various skills (many now nearly lost) and the establishment of their nationally recognised garden.

John and Colleen Graham have been practising 'self-sufficiency' all their married life, due to a lack of finances in the early days. The Grahams have featured on ABC television and other media due to their way of 'making do'.
