Summary

This interview with Bill Stefaniak, lawyer and state politican, focuses on the Polish Australian aspects of his life. Stefaniak recalls his family background, his father having been a foundation member of the Polish Ex-Servicemen's Club and White Eagle Club in Canberra; the family's migration to Australia and settlement in Canberra; the Canberra Polish community; his early schooling and tertiary studies in Canberra; his interest in rugby; Polish customs observed in the home; his work as a solicitor at Muswellbrook, N.S.W.; the development of his political interests at school and university; his membership of the Liberal Party (1984); his visit to Poland; his sense of identity today and attitiude to official multiculturalism.

Biography/History

William George (Bill) Stefaniak was born in Canberra, A.C.T.. At the time of interview he was a Member of the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly, Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Opposition Spokesman on Sport, Recreation, the Arts, Gaming and Racing, and Shadow Attorney-General.
