Sailor speaks of her grandparents as belonging to the Kalkadoon people; in 1920 her grandmother was sent to Palm Island; her grandfather was a South Sea Islander; her father was sent to work at the age of 12; her mother was raised by her aunts; she notes that psychological problems of earlier generations are often transmitted via the children; she lived a traditional lifestyle at Rose Bay, Townsville; later she had her first child at age 17, and five more children by age 24; she taught herself to read; later she became an activist for Aboriginal issues and then began her tertiary studies; in 1995 she graduated with a B.A. from James Cook University with a double major in history; currently she is studying for her Masters degree; the dissent between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Qld.
