Folkloric recording. Smith was born in Launceston, Tas. He recalls his family background; his early schooling; training to be a researcher in educational measurement; his work as an author of textbooks for tertiary institutions; his various teaching positions; the background to his interest in writing a book about country music star Tex Morton; the stages of documenting research material for the book and the contacts he had made with radio stations, artists and engineers (music) in Canada, America & Australia. Smith comments on the use of songs as an aid to teaching history and cites Tex's anti war song, The widow next door, as an example. Smith recalls rhymes learnt during his school days; how his love of country music developed.
